Pictured above are Battery Backup Power, Inc. double conversion pure sine wave uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems teamed with a stand alone isolation transformer providing clean uninterrupted power to flow cytometers and laboratory computers at Providence Medical Center. A BD LSRII, Fortessa LSR, Aria II are all provided uninterrupted power by Battery Backup Power, Inc. uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems.

“Flow cytometry is a technology that is used to analyze the physical and chemical characteristics of particles in a fluid as it passes through at least one laser. Cell components are fluorescently labelled and then excited by the laser to emit light at varying wavelengths.”

Providence laboratory technicians needed clean, uninterrupted power for the duration of their tests to be accurate. Offline and line interactive uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems weren’t up to the task because they have a small (millisecond) delay before emergency battery power is switched on. Battery Backup Power, Inc. online (double conversion) uninterruptible supply systems always have emergency battery power engaged, so there is no interruption. The Manager of Flow Cytometry at Providence Medical Center stated, “I was running instrument calibration and plugged and unplugged the Battery Backup unit several times for several minutes at a time…It performed very well, switching itself to battery power without causing any surges, or interference…Calibration of the instrument runs perfectly normally.

Besides the requirement for uninterrupted power, the laboratory technicians were experiencing “video camera noise on the internal Accudrop camera when the high density filter was in place…slow moving wave forms like snow on old style B&W TVs which were rendering the Accudrop algorithm useless.” Battery Backup Power, Inc. diagnosed this quickly as electrical noise/feedback caused by other equipment operating in the facility. The issue was resolved with a separate Battery Backup Power, Inc. isolation transformer installed before the uninterruptible power supply and laboratory instruments to further purify the power.

According to Providence Medical Center’s Laboratory Manager, “Everything is working brilliantly!
