In late August 2015, Hematology Oncology Consultants discovered they had a potential issue. Their VitalPath Integrated Dispensing Solution by Cardinal Health Specialty Solutions was perfect at efficiently and safely dispensing drugs when there was power, but it could put “hundreds of thousands of dollars” of drugs at risk during an outage. The refrigerated piece of the drug dispensing cabinet was the main concern. If an outage occurred during business hours, the drugs could be relocated to mobile cold storage, but if an outage happened when no one was onsite, the refrigerated, potentially lifesaving drugs that oncology patients needed could be lost. Located in a medical office building instead of a hospital, there was simply no backup generator power or notification system available.
To solve this issue, they placed a call to the company that specializes in backup power systems for medical facilities and laboratories, Battery Backup Power, Inc. The office administrator at Hematology Oncology Consultants gave Ross Modglin of Battery Backup Power, Inc. the make and model of their drug cabinet and explained the issue Hematology Oncology Consultants was potentially facing. Ross then made a call to Cardinal Health Specialty Solutions and received the power consumption specifications for the VitalPath Integrated Dispensing Solution. Since the drug cabinet included a cold storage module, the inrush (startup current) had to be accounted for. HOC also wanted 45 minutes of backup battery power for the drug cabinet and to be notified by phone if the power failed outside of business hours. A phone notification would allow someone to respond to and transfer the drugs in cold storage to a mobile or offsite alternative cold storage location.
Ross was able to create a solution for Hematology Oncology Consultants that solved their main problem and met all the requirements. He recommended the Battery Backup Power, Inc. 2,000 VA (2 kVA) / 1,400 Watt (1.4 kW) Double Conversion Battery Backup Power Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). This system would provide automatic medical grade pure sine wave double conversion backup power for over 45 minutes and meet the inrush current capacity requirements specifically for the VitalPath Integrated Dispensing Solution system. It also included both USB and Serial communication ports for monitoring and notification alerts to be sent by an attached computer in the case of a power outage.
Hematology Oncology Consultants purchased the Battery Backup Power, Inc. uninterruptible power supply (UPS) recommended by Ross in early September 2015. A few weeks later when a computer with a PCI modem plugged into the fax line was setup next to the VitalPath Drug Cabinet and subsequently plugged into the battery backup unit (power and communication), Ross remotely configured the computer to call the cell phone of a staff member in the event of a power outage. The Battery Backup Power, Inc. uninterruptible power supply (UPS) notifies the attached computer of an outage via the USB or Serial Port which then triggers software to place a call through a PCI computer modem to a number specified by the Battery Backup Power, Inc. client. Remote computer configuration is a free service Battery Backup Power, Inc. provides for its customers.
The patients of Hematology Oncology Consultants can be sure that they will be getting the highest quality drugs maintained at the required temperature until they receive them. Patients of Oncology facilities without backup power systems in place may never know if the drugs they are receiving and paid for are still good. It only takes one power outage during off hours to bring refrigerated drugs to room temperature rendering them useless.
